A cleaner journey through Kenya’s cities

Every day, buses and matatus carry people to work, school and home. These vehicles keep cities moving, but diesel engines also bring tailpipe emissions, street-level air pollution, noise and exposure to volatile fuel prices.

BasiGo is demonstrating a different model. Electric buses designed for East African operations are paired with charging depots, maintenance support and a pay-as-you-drive model that helps operators access the technology without carrying the full upfront risk alone.

Kenya’s electricity mix strengthens the climate case for electrification. On-board telematics record every kilometer traveled and every kilowatt-hour consumed, turning ordinary passenger journeys into an auditable stream of data for verified emissions reductions.

Why carbon finance is critical.

Electric buses can reduce operating emissions, but upfront vehicle costs, charging infrastructure and unfamiliar technology can slow adoption. Carbon finance adds revenue linked directly to verified diesel displacement.

That revenue can support fleet deployment, charging, data systems, monitoring and verification, improving the economics of expansion while rewarding real-world operation rather than vehicle orders alone. For organizations interested in innovation and scalable climate solutions, the project provides exposure to the future of electric mobility in Africa

Climate Impact Partners contracted the first cohort of Gold Standard VERs, helping connect a first-of-its-kind African transport project with buyers seeking measurable low-carbon mobility impact.

From challenge to measurable impact.

Challenge
Kenya’s growing cities need reliable and affordable public transport. Diesel buses meet that need today but expose operators to fuel-price volatility and contribute to greenhouse-gas emissions and local air pollution. Electric buses face a different set of barriers. Operators need access to vehicles, charging, maintenance and finance, while the carbon benefit depends on how often buses run, how much electricity they use and which diesel journeys they replace.
Solution
BasiGo combines buses, charging depots, service support and a pay-as-you-drive model designed around local bus operators. This reduces the need for operators to purchase the entire technology system upfront. On-board telematics record distance and electricity use in real time. Charging records and operational data create a traceable basis for calculating project emissions and the diesel activity displaced. Carbon finance adds a performance-linked revenue stream, while Gold Standard certification and verification provide external requirements for quantification and reporting.
Impact
Each electric journey replaces diesel operation at the point of use, reducing tailpipe pollution and creating a quieter passenger experience. Climate impact is measured journey by journey rather than assumed from the number of buses delivered. That makes operating performance central to the project’s value. As the fleet and charging network grow, BasiGo can provide a replicable model for urban transport electrification across Africa, combining cleaner mobility with transparent carbon-market data.

One project. A multitude of outcomes.

Closer to the project.
More confidence in the impact.

Monitoring begins with data generated by the buses themselves. Telematics record kilometers and electricity use, supporting a transparent calculation of diesel activity displaced and project emissions.

Gold Standard certification and independent verification provide external assurance. Climate Impact Partners’ first-credit purchase connects those verified reductions with corporate buyers and supports the project’s route to market.
