High Quality CDR solutions

Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) refers to approaches that remove CO₂ from the atmosphere and store it. At Climate Impact Partners, we use the term CDR to describe technology-based removal solutions, including biochar, direct air capture and enhanced rock weathering.

Our experts help you access high-quality projects, understand the technologies behind them and build a removals portfolio aligned with your climate goals.

Selecting the right CDR project

Understanding carbon removals requires more than comparing technologies. Our experts assess project quality, evaluate technology-specific risks, and track market developments across one of the fastest-growing areas of the voluntary carbon market.

This expertise sits behind every project we offer, helping you identify high-quality solutions and build a portfolio aligned with your business objectives and climate goals.

Nature-based or technology-based removals?

Both nature and technology can remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but they work in different ways and offer different benefits.

Nature-based removals
Solutions such as reforestation and ecosystem restoration remove carbon through natural processes, storing it in trees, vegetation and soils. They can also support biodiversity, communities and build ecosystem resilience, although carbon storage may be vulnerable to risks such as fire or drought.
Technology-based removals
Solutions such as direct air capture, biochar and enhanced rock weathering use engineered processes to remove carbon dioxide and store it in geological formations, stable materials or minerals. Depending on the technology and storage method, they can offer carbon storage designed to last hundreds or thousands of years, with the potential to scale as technologies and infrastructure develop. However, new technologies have high delivery risk and can be expensive until they scale.
Which approach is right for your business?
Nature-based and technology-based removals can play complementary roles in a climate strategy. We help you understand the differences in durability, cost, availability, delivery risk and wider impact, so you can choose the right combination for your goals.

Build carbon removals into your long-term strategy

Technology-based removals can be an important part of a balanced carbon credit portfolio, but they often come at a higher cost than other project types.

We help you combine high-quality emissions avoidance, nature-based solutions and technology-based removals to deliver impact today while building towards your longer-term climate goals.

Our experts can help you determine the right mix for your budget, risk appetite and future requirements, including how to increase your commitment to durable removals over time.

Why support technology based carbon removals?

Carbon removals can help address emissions while supporting the development of  technologies needed for long-term climate action.

FAQs

What are carbon removal credits?

Carbon removal credits represent one tonne of carbon dioxide removed from the atmosphere and stored through a verified carbon removal project. Technologies include biochar, direct air capture, enhanced rock weathering, bio-oil storage, and other emerging carbon removal pathways.

How do carbon removals differ from other carbon credits?

Many carbon credits focus on avoiding or reducing emissions that would otherwise occur. Carbon removals actively remove carbon dioxide already in the atmosphere and store it for the long term. As carbon markets evolve, removals are becoming an increasingly important part of many organizations' climate strategies.

How do you assess carbon removal projects?

We assess every project against the factors that matter most for long-term impact, including durability, additionality, technology maturity, verification, scalability, and delivery risk. Our due diligence helps clients understand the quality and trade-offs behind every credit.

How do you verify carbon has been removed?

We prioritize projects that use robust monitoring, reporting, and verification processes. This includes independent third-party verification, transparent methodologies, and ongoing performance monitoring to help ensure credits deliver the impact they claim.

Do all carbon removal credits have the same durability?

No. Different technologies store carbon for different lengths of time. Some pathways are designed to store carbon for decades, while others aim for centuries or longer. We help clients understand these differences and identify solutions aligned with their goals.

Should we invest in one removal technology or a portfolio?

Most organizations choose a portfolio approach. Combining different technologies can help balance durability, technology maturity, cost, scalability, and availability while supporting a broader range of climate outcomes.

Why do carbon removal credits typically cost more?

Many carbon removal technologies are still scaling and require significant investment in infrastructure, monitoring, and verification. Demand for high-quality removals is also growing faster than available supply, which can increase prices.

Can we secure future carbon removal supply?

Yes. Many organizations use forward purchasing agreements to secure future access to high-quality removals. This can help improve supply certainty and support the growth of emerging carbon removal technologies.

How do carbon removals fit into a climate strategy?

Carbon removals can help organizations address emissions that remain difficult to eliminate while supporting the development of technologies needed for long-term climate action. We help clients build portfolios aligned with their climate goals, budget, and procurement strategy.

How do you manage risk in a rapidly evolving market?

Carbon removals are one of the fastest-growing areas of the voluntary carbon market. Our experts continuously assess project developers, technologies, standards, and methodologies to help clients navigate change and make informed decisions.

Why work with Climate Impact Partners on carbon removals?

Our expertise spans carbon procurement, technical due diligence, portfolio design, and project development. We help clients understand a complex market, assess quality, and build carbon removal portfolios aligned with their climate strategy and business objectives.
