Know your footprint. Know where to act.

A robust carbon footprint is the foundation for credible climate action. We help you establish the right scope, understand where your emissions come from and turn complex data into a clear picture of where to act.

Whether you are measuring for the first time, refreshing an existing footprint or working toward certification, we connect you with experienced independent assessment partners and support you throughout the process.

Turn measurement into meaningful action

A footprint is more than a number. Done well, it helps you prioritize resources, track progress and make better-informed climate decisions.

How footprint measurement works

We make the process clear and manageable, combining our expertise with independent assessment support.

1. Define what you need to measure
We start by understanding your objectives and defining the appropriate boundary and scope for your assessment. Where independent assessment is required, we help identify the right partner based on your business, location, size and support needs.
2. Agree the scope and data
A kickoff session establishes what will be included, the data required, responsibilities and timelines. Your assessment partner will also explain any exclusions or assumptions.
3. Collect your data
You gather the relevant business data, with support from both Climate Impact Partners and your assessment partner. Depending on the footprint, this could include energy and fuel use, company vehicles, waste, business travel and other relevant emissions sources.
4. Address data gaps
Perfect data is not always available. Where information is missing, your assessment partner can help determine appropriate conservative estimates and assumptions so the assessment remains robust.
5. Calculate your footprint
Your assessment partner analyzes the data to calculate your greenhouse gas emissions and provide a clear view of the sources that make up your footprint. Where the assessment supports certification, the findings are documented in a Greenhouse Gas Assessment Report.
6. Turn insight into action
Measurement is the beginning, not the end. We help you interpret the findings, identify reduction opportunities and connect your footprint to your wider climate strategy and action.

From footprint to reduction

Once you know where your emissions come from, the next step is deciding where and how to act. Our experts help you turn measurement into a practical approach that reflects your emissions profile, climate goals, resources and business priorities. This can include:

  • Identifying and prioritizing reduction opportunities
  • Supporting target setting and decarbonization planning
  • Understanding Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions
  • Exploring renewable energy and other reduction interventions
  • Addressing harder-to-abate emissions
  • Connecting reduction plans with high-quality carbon credits
  • Measuring progress as your strategy evolves

FAQs

What is a carbon footprint?

A carbon footprint measures the greenhouse gas emissions associated with an organization, product, service or activity. The appropriate scope depends on what you are measuring and what you want to achieve.

What data will we need?

This depends on the scope of your assessment. For a company footprint, information can include fuel use, purchased energy, company vehicles, waste, business travel and other relevant emissions sources.

What if we don't have all the data?

Gaps are common, particularly when organizations begin measuring more complex emissions. An experienced assessment partner can help identify appropriate conservative estimates and assumptions where robust primary data is not available.

Do Climate Impact Partners calculate the footprint?

Where independent assessment is required, we connect you with experienced third-party emissions assessment providers, including Anthesis, Ecometrica, Quantis and RSK. We select partners according to factors such as your business, location, size and support needs, and remain involved throughout the process.

Do we need a footprint for certification?

Yes. Any credible certification should be underpinned by an independent measurement of your carbon footprint. This is a requirement of both our CarbonNeutral® and Climate Impact Partners Protocols, helping ensure claims are based on robust, independently assessed emissions data.

What happens after our footprint has been measured?

Your footprint shows where emissions are concentrated and where action should be prioritized. We can then help translate those insights into reduction plans, wider climate action and, where appropriate, the use of high-quality carbon credits.
