Turning periodic checks into continuous methane control.

Methane is one of the world's most powerful climate superpollutants, trapping significantly more heat than carbon dioxide over the short term. Landfills are a major source of methane emissions, making better detection and capture one of the fastest ways to help slow near-term warming.

Landfills are among the largest sources of human-caused methane emissions. Yet gas collection systems are often adjusted periodically rather than continuously, allowing performance to drift between site visits.

LoCI Controls transforms that process through real-time monitoring, analytics and automated optimization. At Broome County’s Nanticoke Landfill, sensors and cloud-based controls help operators identify problems sooner, improve gas collection performance and capture additional methane that might otherwise escape to the atmosphere.

Why carbon finance is critical.

US landfills can be subject to gas-management regulation, but meeting those requirements does not necessarily mean optimizing methane capture.

Carbon finance rewards only the eligible additional methane captured and destroyed above an approved baseline. The revenue helps fund the technology, monitoring, operation, data and independent verification needed to go beyond standard practice.

The methodology is also designed to meet the requirements of the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market's CCPs, providing buyers with additional confidence in the quality and integrity of the credited reductions.

For buyers, this provides measurable methane reductions supported by continuous data and independent verification.

Challenge
Landfill methane is produced continuously and unevenly. Each well responds differently as waste conditions, moisture, temperature and pressure change. Traditional wellfield tuning relies on scheduled field visits. Between visits, vacuum can weaken, liquids can accumulate and gas quality can change, leaving the system operating below its potential. Because methane has a strong near-term warming effect, delays in identifying and correcting poor performance have immediate climate consequences.
Solution
LoCI’s system connects real-time field sensors with cloud analytics and automated valve control. Data on gas composition, flow, pressure, liquid levels, temperature and valve position provides a live picture of wellfield behavior. Algorithms and alerts guide operators toward the wells requiring attention, while automated adjustments can occur more frequently than manual tuning alone. Under the ACR methodology, the project quantifies the eligible increase in methane collection above baseline performance. Captured gas must then be destroyed or used beneficially through an eligible route.
Impact
More methane recovered means less methane reaches the atmosphere. Depending on site configuration, captured gas can be flared or converted into useful energy. Operators gain better visibility, faster troubleshooting and more stable gas quality, creating operational value alongside the carbon benefit. The wider potential is significant: a repeatable technology model that can improve performance across eligible regulated landfills without waiting for entirely new waste infrastructure.

One project. A multitude of outcomes.

Closer to the project. More confidence in the impact.

The project applies an ACR methodology specifically updated to recognize automated landfill-gas collection systems. Continuous operational data creates a stronger evidence trail than periodic manual tuning alone.

Confidence rests on a conservative baseline, additionality beyond regulation and common practice, accurate gas metering, and independent verification of methane destruction or beneficial use.
