Tambopata National Reserve REDD+, Peru

Type: Nature-based Solutions | Forest Conservation (REDD+)
Region: South America
Standard: VCS, CCB

Madre de Dios has been the best-preserved sector of Peruvian Amazon historically. However, the Interoceanic Highway, which connects Peru’s coast to Brazil, has increased forest degradation due to land use change and illegal gold mining occurring in the nationally protected areas of Tambopata and Bahuaja-Sonene.

With additional carbon revenue, this project is strengthening protection and monitoring by patrols and engaging the local community through cocoa agroforestry systems. Cocoa is promoted on land formerly degraded by agriculture and livestock, located in the buffer zone of the project, as the main strategy to avoid the expansion of deforestation for agriculture.

This project is CCB Gold rated on Climate and Biodiversity benefits. The Madre de Dios region, which is only 7% of Peru's land mass, has a considerable portion of Peru’s biodiversity. It is home to around 30% of Peru’s species of amphibians, reptiles and fresh-water fishes and more than 50% of the diversity of mammals and birds recorded in Peru, including IUCN Red List endangered species.

In addition to delivering emissions reductions to help take urgent action to combat climate change (SDG 13), the project delivers a number of other sustainable development benefits. It has been verified by the Climate, Community and Biodiversity (CCB) standards (which is run by Verra) to contribute to other SDGs, these include:

  • No Poverty: Increases proportion of population living in households with access to basic services
  • Zero Hunger: Increases proportion of agricultural area under productive and sustainable agriculture
  • Quality Education: Increases participation rate of youth and adults in formal and non-formal education and training
  • Gender Equality: Increases proportion of total agricultural population with ownership or secure rights over agricultural land, by sex; and (b) share of women among owners or rights-bearers of agricultural land, by type of tenure
  • Decent Work and Economic Growth: Increases annual growth rate of real GDP per employed person
  • Reduced Inequalities: Increases total resource flows for development, by recipient and donor countries and type of flow
  • Responsible Consumption and Production: Increases the sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources
  • Life on Land: Increases forest area as a proportion of total land area and progress towards sustainable forest management
