Karnataka Solar Power, India

Type: Sustainable Infrastructure | Renewable Energy
Region: Asia
Standard: Gold Standard

India is now the most populous country in the world as well as the second largest coal and third largest oil consumer. Globally, 60% of electricity globally is still generated by fossil fuels. To limit global warming to 1.5°C, renewables must not only meet growing energy demand but replace fossil fuel.

This project, led by ReNew Solar Energy (Karnataka) Private Limited, is creating a new solar power facility in Southern India with 60MW capacity that will feed into the grid. The project will displace nearly 100,000 MWh/year from the Indian grid, which fossil fuel power plants currently dominate.

The project is a clean technology investment in the region, which would not have taken place in the absence of the carbon credit benefits the project activity will also help to reduce the demand-supply gap in the state. It also generates employment opportunities and invests in regional infrastructure.

In addition to delivering emissions reductions to take climate action (SDG 13), the project delivers other benefits:

  • Affordable and Clean Energy: Contribute to increasing the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix. Clean electricity generated by these projects displaces electricity which would otherwise be powered by fossil fuels.
  • Decent Work and Economic Growth: The project would help in generating employment opportunities during the construction and operation phases. The project activity will lead to development in infrastructure in the region like development of roads and also may promote business with improved power generation.

Our goal is to deliver 1 billion tonnes of emissions reductions
