Pangalengan Geothermal, Indonesia

The project uses an extensive geothermal reservoir adjacent to the Wayang Windu twin volcano in West Java, Indonesia, to deliver more than 3.7 million MWh of reliable, clean and renewable electricity to the state electricity grid. With two stations of 110 MW and 117 MW, the plant is the largest geothermal power station in Indonesia and is pivotal in taking advantage of the country’s vast geothermal resources and renewable energy potential. 

Production wells are used to access hot steam from the geothermal reservoir and send the naturally hot fluid to steam turbine units, reducing GHG emissions by displacing fossil fuel electricity generation with a renewable source. Significant resources have been provided to help develop local communities in the 13 villages in the Pangalengan district and improve the surrounding area.

In addition to delivering more than 1.5 million tonnes of emissions reductions each year, the project delivers a number of other benefits including:

• Affordable and Clean Energy: The plant provides reliable, clean and renewable electricity to the state electricity grid.
• Decent Work and Economic Growth: The project involves helping local farmers move from the production of commodity vegetables to higher value silk, coffee and dairy. In addition, the project works with the local university and business school to train local people in basic welding, entrepreneurship and finance. More than 3,000 scholarships have been provided to students from low income backgrounds.
• Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure: Improvements to the local area, public facilities and infrastructure have also been made.
