Choapa Wind Power, Chile

Type: Sustainable Infrastructure | Renewable Energy
Region: South America
Standard: VCS

Choapa Wind Power in Chile generates clean and renewable electricity for the grid while reducing emissions and reliance on fossil fuels.

Chile has ambitious plans for renewable energy sources like wind and solar. By 2035, the government wants a majority of electricity generated in the country to come from renewable sources, and by 2050 the goal is for over two thirds of to come from renewables.

The project activity involves an onshore Wind Farm in the Coquimbo Region of Chile. The Wind Farm consists of 23 wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 46 MW. The project activity generates renewable energy for the Central Interconnected Electricity System (SIC)

The project generates renewable electricity for the Central Interconnected Electricity System. In this process there is no consumption of any fossil fuel and hence it does not lead to any greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, electricity is generated through sustainable means without causing any negative impact on the environment.

In addition to delivering over 56,700 tonnes of emission reductions each year, the project delivers other sustainable development benefits. These include:

  • Affordable and Clean Energy: This project increases renewable energy-generating capacity in Chile, increasing wind power's share of the total energy output both in Chile and globally. Additionally, as a carbon project, supporting this project increases financial flows in support of clean energy development and renewable energy production, which are key elements of SDG 7 to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.
  • Climate Action: This project reduces total greenhouse gas emissions per year by displacing fossil fuel powered electricity. By reducing demand for unsustainable energy sources, this project supports SDG 13 to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

Our goal is to deliver 1 billion tonnes of emissions reductions by 2030

600+ projects have been supported by Climate Impact Partners

100+ million tonnes of emissions reduced through carbon finance
